While many firms continue to adapt to the changes to the workplace bought on by COVID-19, UniSuper, Australia’s fifth largest superannuation fund, has transitioned to a fully flexible operating model, empowering employees, and assessing performance on outcomes not hours in the office.

In recognition of its commitment to this flexibility, UniSuper has received FlexCareers’ FlexReady Certification, receiving the highest score and level of certification for any corporate or non-government employer to date.

The FlexCareers FlexReady Certification demonstrates an organisation’s genuine commitment to providing flexible work arrangements. Established in 2015 FlexCareers are leaders in diversity, flexibility, and future of work solutions across the entire employee lifecycle. The firm works with leading global organisations and corporates to offer a range of training, consulting, and certification solutions.

UniSuper is one of Australia’s largest superannuation funds and employs over 800 people working across investments, advice, technology, operations, and member services. In June 2021, UniSuper launched uFlex, an initiative focused on empowering its people to be and do their best work for members, employers, and each other.

UniSuper Chief People Officer, Julie Watkins, said:

“Our ‘uFlex’ approach, means we can hire and retain the best people, while delivering important work for our current and future members.”
“uFlex is all about empowering our people to do their best work for our members, employers and each other. For some, that means working remotely more often and just being ‘in person where it counts’. For others it’s about having the flexibility to plan their day around their life commitments, be it a late start to fit in a gym session or for others an early departure to make a school pick up,”

Ms Watkins added that the COVID-19 environment had caused many workplaces to accelerate flexible working practices.

“Like most of the world, the pandemic challenged our views on what was possible around flexible working. Remote working during COVID-19 has proven productivity can be maintained or enhanced when working flexibly. Our uFlex model embeds this in the organisation for the long term.”

Creating the best team to drive results for members

In July this year, UniSuper opened its award-winning fund to new members outside the higher education and research sector. With the formal addition of the FlexCareers FlexReady certification, Ms Watkins said all members would benefit from being with a superfund that focuses on striving for better.

“We have a philosophy of genuine care for our members, employers and each other, which is aligned to our uFlex approach. We challenge our people to look at the principles and think about the needs of our members, their customers, their team and their own,”
