Investing in Australian innovation and research

In 2022, UniSuper committed $75 million to invest with Uniseed, the longest-running venture fund manager partnering with the Australian higher education sector. We're pleased to announce we've now raised our commitment to $100 million.

In 2022, UniSuper made a $75 million commitment to Uniseed and became its exclusive institutional investment partner. We’ve now raised our commitment to $100 million, enabling our members to continue to actively participate in the development of world-leading, future-shaping research coming out of Australian universities.

Who is Uniseed?

Uniseed is a venture fund manager which provides seed funding for early-stage research and technology startups, helping to commercialise technologies developed by Australian universities and research institutions.

Uniseed's research partners include the universities of Melbourne, New South Wales, Newcastle, Queensland, Sydney, Macquarie University, Monash University, Western Sydney University and University of Technology Sydney, as well as the CSIRO.

What do we invest in through Uniseed?

Uniseed provides us the opportunity to invest in early-stage opportunities and new technologies coming out of its research partners. Through Uniseed, we're investing in a range of startup businesses across industries such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, quantum computing and green energy. Some examples are:

  • Kinoxis Therapeutics (University of Sydney), a biotechnology company developing new treatments to improve the quality of life of people living with social dysfunction and substance use disorders.
  • Analog Quantum Circuits (University of Queensland), which is developing superconducting quantum technology and has received strong government grant support.
  • Aravax (Monash University), a biotechnology company developing treatments for peanut and other food allergies.

By increasing our commitment to Uniseed, we’re continuing to support the development and commercialisation of Australian research and innovation. It’s a natural fit for UniSuper given our heritage in the higher education and research sector.

Uniseed continues to manage these investments day-to-day, and our own in-house Investments team works closely with Uniseed. The Uniseed investments feed into our Sustainable High Growth and Sustainable Balanced1 options as part of their allocation to unlisted infrastructure & private equity.
