Investment costs

At UniSuper, we aim to keep our fees and costs competitive. We don’t pay commissions to agents. This means you pay less to enjoy the benefits of being a UniSuper member.

What you pay for

Investment fees, with other indirect costs (referred to as Indirect Cost Ratios, or ICRs), relate to the cost of managing each investment option but do not include account-based fees. Some of these are deducted from the assets of the Fund and from each of our investment options and some portions are deducted from entities we invest in. They are expressed as percentages of the total average net assets in a particular investment option.

These fees and costs reflect internal and external fees we incur when managing each option, including:

  • fees charged by external investment managers
  • fees charged by UniSuper Management Pty Ltd for assets we manage internally
  • custodial and valuation fees
  • the cost of funding the operational risk reserve (which is a reserve that all superannuation funds are required to create)
  • costs incurred within interposed vehicles, and
  • implied costs when trading in OTC derivatives.

Investment fees and ICRs don't include account-based fees such as administration, switching or withdrawal fees. The actual amount we charge you each financial year depends on:

  • the size of the fund
  • the type of assets held
  • the investment mandates we give to external investment managers
  • the actual investment performance achieved, and
  • any performance-based fees we pay.

The actual amount you’ll be charged in subsequent financial years will depend on the actual fees, costs and taxes incurred by the Trustee in managing the investment option. From 1 October 2018 we anticipate an increase in the investment fee of an additional 0.03% (excluding Cash and Australian Bond options) and a reduction of the ICR of 0.03% on the basis that the funding of the Operational Risk Reserve will reduce from 0.06% to 0.03% although as the investment fees and ICR shown are estimates only, they may increase or decrease depending on the actual fee and costs incurred.
