Responsible investing at UniSuper

As a responsible investor, we assess environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors across every investment we make.

Our approach to responsible investing

We seek to understand the ESG factors of our investments to gain greater insights into our investment decisions and understand the risks and opportunities our investments face.

We believe companies with good corporate behaviour make for better investments, because these companies also tend to manage other aspects of their business well.

Our Climate Change Position Statement outlines how we assess climate risk and adaptation in our investment management process.

We're an active owner

When we invest in a company, we look at a number of key factors, including:

  • climate risk management
  • ESG disclosure and transparency by investee companies
  • human rights in the supply chain
  • occupational health and safety (OHS)
  • remuneration.

Where necessary, we’ll seek to drive change in the way our investments manage and disclose ESG factors. We also use our voting rights to influence and drive improved ESG practices.

We assess fund manager’s ESG capabilities before deciding to invest with them, and regularly review their ESG approaches to ensure they maintain high standards.

Member choice

If you don’t want your money invested in certain sectors, or want to focus on companies that support environmental and sustainable activities we offer a range of sustainable and environmental investment options.

We have a legal ‘fiduciary’ obligation to our members to aim to maximise their financial outcomes within the constraints that apply to each investment option. Read our position on divestment.

Advocacy and collaboration

We work with peak industry bodies, as well as like-minded investors, to gain better insights into our investments’ ESG practices, and collaborate to drive initiatives.

Some of the peak industry bodies we work with are:

  • Australian Council of Superannuation Investors (ACSI)
  • Investor Group on Climate Change (IGCC)
  • Responsible Investment Association Australia (RIAA)
  • International Corporate Governance Network (ICGN)
  • Asian Corporate Governance Association (ACGA)
  • ESG Research Australia (ESG RA)
  • CDP (formerly Carbon Disclosure Project).
